Container traffic on network owned by Russian Railways up 14% in January-August 2021
In January-August 2021, 4,248,000 loaded and empty Twenty-Foot Equivalent units (TEU) containers were transported on the Russian Railways’ network along all routes, 13.9% more than in the same eight-month period of 2020.
On domestic routes, 1,605,700 TEUs were shipped, an increase of 6.4%, while containers for export increased to 1,048,600 TEUs, up 9.4%, containers for import rose to 899,200 TEUs, up 15.9%, while containers in transit jumped 1.4 times to 694,500 TEUs.
The number of loaded containers dispatched on all routes increased by 19.5% and exceeded 3 million TEUs loaded with more than 42.3 million tons of cargo, up by 16.8%, including the following categories of freight. The figures in brackets show the percentage change compared to January August 2020.

- timber – 402,600 (+ 9.7%);
- industrial goods – 314,300 (+ 30.4%);
- hardware – 276,500 (+ 32.8%);
- machines, machine tools, engines – 245,500 (+ 34.5%);
- paper – 231,700 (-1.2%);
- automobiles and components – 187,300 (+ 31.2%);
- ferrous metals – 161,600 (+ 23.2%);
- miscellaneous and containerised cargo – 110,400 (+ 34.9%);
- non-ferrous metals – 103,100 (+ 9.7%);
- construction materials – 97,900 (+ 18%);
- oil and petroleum products – 48,000 (-13.4%);
- chemical and mineral fertilisers – 33,700 (+ 22.7%);
- non-ferrous ore and sulphur feedstock – 23,800 (up by a factor of 1.5);
- coal – 21,100 (new cargo);
- metal structures – 10,700 (+ 2.3%);
- fish – 17,000 (+ 21.3%);
- grain – 19,200 (up by a factor of 3.5);
- milled products – 6,800 (-2.5%);
- fruit, vegetables and potatoes – 7,400 (up by a factor of 1.5);
- miscellaneous food products – 120,600 (+ 19.8%).
